Daylight saving

  • No state or territory changes its clocks in winter.

The daylight saving page has every state's dates for three summers, and the law behind each.

Where the start date comes from

The Bureau of Meteorology counts Australia's seasons from the first of the month, not from the solstices and equinoxes, because that fits Australian temperatures better. The seasons page has all four side by side, and the tropics' wet and dry.

The other three: summer · autumn · spring.

Frequently asked questions

Is the shortest day the coldest?
No. The winter solstice in late June has the least daylight — Hobart gets about nine hours of it, Darwin about eleven and a half — but the oceans hold their warmth, so across much of southern Australia the coldest week typically comes in July, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
