Why the answers differ

There is no national Anzac Day law: each state and territory's own Act decides what happens when 25 April falls on a weekend, and three different rules come out of eight Acts.

  • NSW: 25 April always (section 4(g)) — the Act never moves it. An extra Monday comes only from a ministerial order under section 5: one order, made in 2026, added the Monday in both 2026 and 2027, and the 25th still counts.
  • VIC: 25 April always (section 6(h)), and nothing is added when it falls on a weekend.
  • QLD: 25 April, or the following Monday if the 25th is a Sunday (the Schedule) — a swap, and for a Sunday only.
  • WA: 25 April, and the following Monday as well whenever the 25th is a Saturday or a Sunday (Schedule 2).
  • SA: 25 April (section 3(1)(h)); the Act has no weekend rule.
  • TAS: 25 April (section 4(g)); the Act has no weekend rule.
  • ACT: 25 April, or the following Monday if the 25th is a Sunday (section 3(1)(a)(viii)) — and declarations under section 3(1)(b), one for 2026 and one for 2027, made the other day a holiday too, so the ACT keeps both.
  • NT: 25 April, or the following Monday if the 25th is a Sunday (Schedule 2) — a swap, Sunday only.

Shops on Anzac Day

  • NSW: restricted trading: Anzac Day. You may still read that NSW shops can open after 1pm on Anzac Day. That rule has gone: the Retail Trading Amendment (Anzac Day Trading Hours) Act 2024 changed s4(c) to 'at all times on Anzac Day', and Schedule 2 Part 6 cl 12 removed the old Shops and Industries Act 1962 exemption for those shops.
  • VIC: restricted trading: Anzac Day until 1pm.
  • QLD: restricted trading: Anzac Day (25 April). Independent retail shops, otherwise exempt, must also stay closed until 1pm on 25 April unless they sell mainly food or groceries (s17(2)) — and a moved public holiday does not move that closure either (s17(3)). In 2027 the public holiday is Monday 26 April, but the closed trading day is still Sunday 25 April.
  • WA: General retail shops close on every public holiday unless an order opens them, and Anzac Day is one of three days on which no order can open a metropolitan one (s12E(3A)). Small retail shops may open at any time (s12C).
  • SA: restricted trading: every public holiday, inside a shopping district: greater Adelaide by definition, or a district proclaimed at a council's request. In the Adelaide CBD Tourist Precinct shops may open from 12 noon to 5pm on Anzac Day (s13(2)(f)).
  • TAS: Anzac Day comes under a separate Act, the Anzac Day Observance Act 1929, which has not been read here.
  • ACT: no shop trading-hours law at all (liquor and gambling licences keep their own hours).
  • NT: no shop trading-hours law at all (liquor and gambling licences keep their own hours).

Where each date comes from

Each state and territory's Act, with the ministerial orders and declarations that add a day, read and checked between Friday 4 September 2026 and Wednesday 30 September 2026. The instrument for each is named, with its link, on the state's page. For a decision that depends on it, confirm there.

Every other statewide holiday, state by state, is on the year calendar; the two that fall in different months by state have pages of their own, Labour Day and the King's Birthday.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Monday after Anzac Day a public holiday in 2027?

In NSW, QLD, WA, the ACT and the NT, yes — Monday 26 April 2027. In VIC, SA and TAS, no: Anzac Day stays on the Sunday and nothing replaces it.

Is Anzac Day a public holiday when it falls on a weekend?

It depends on the state. Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania keep 25 April and add nothing. Western Australia keeps it and adds the Monday for a Saturday or a Sunday. Queensland and the Northern Territory move the holiday to the Monday, but only for a Sunday. New South Wales and the ACT have both days in 2026 and 2027 — through one ministerial order covering the two years in New South Wales, and a declaration for each year in the ACT.

Are shops open on Anzac Day?

It depends on the state. NSW, VIC and QLD name Anzac Day among their restricted trading days (Victoria until 1pm). Western Australia's general retail shops close on every public holiday, and no order can open them on Anzac Day in the metropolitan area; small shops may open. South Australia's shops may not open on a public holiday, Anzac Day included, inside a shopping district — greater Adelaide, or a district proclaimed at a council's request — except in the Adelaide CBD tourist precinct, which may open from noon to 5pm on Anzac Day. The ACT and the NT have no shop trading-hours law at all. Tasmania's Anzac Day trading law has not been read here. Each state's page sets out what may open.
