The public holiday it brings

Friday 1 October 2027, the day before, is a public holiday in Victoria — worked out from the Act, and not yet published by the Victorian Government.

No other state or territory has a public holiday that Friday — it is a working day everywhere outside Victoria.

The Monday after, Monday 4 October 2027, is Labour Day in NSW, SA and the ACT; and the King's Birthday in QLD — so the Grand Final weekend is a long weekend there too.

Every Victorian date, with the section of the Act each one comes from, is on public holidays in Victoria; who else has a long weekend that week is on October's long weekends.

Where the date comes from

No law sets the Grand Final; the AFL's fixture does, a year at a time. These dates are read from what was announced:

When checked on 30 September 2026, the Victorian Government's own holiday list said the Friday "typically falls on the last Friday in September". In 2027 it does not: the Grand Final is in October, so the holiday moves with it. That is why this page reads the fixture and states nothing it has not seen.

Frequently asked questions

Is Grand Final Friday a public holiday outside Victoria?
Not anywhere else. It comes from section 6(ia) of the Victorian Public Holidays Act 1993, inserted in 2019, and no other jurisdiction has an equivalent — the other seven work that Friday as usual.
When is the 2028 Grand Final?
The AFL had not announced it when this page was last checked, on Wednesday 30 September 2026. The date is set by the season's fixture rather than a rule, so this page will not guess it — the usual guess, the last Saturday in September, would have been wrong for 2027.
