The dates line up and the reasons do not
2–4 October is a long weekend in NSW, QLD, SA and the ACT — but not for the same public holidays: NSW, SA and the ACT for Labour Day; QLD for King's Birthday.
It matters more than a trivia note. A national employer running one roster across those states is covering different public holidays on the same calendar days, and the penalty rates follow the holiday, not the date.
Long weekends only part of a state gets
The table above answers for whole states, because a holiday that covers one district is not a state's long weekend. But it is still a long weekend for the people it covers — and in October 2027 there are two.
One October 2028 long weekend has no date yet
VIC — Friday before the AFL Grand Final, 2028
No 2028 Grand Final date had been announced when this was checked on 30 September 2026. It fell in September in 2026 and in October in 2027, so neither month can be ruled out.
Until it is set, October 2028 can be answered for every other jurisdiction that has published 2028 but not for VIC: if the Friday lands this month, it makes a long weekend there that no list can show yet. Why, and what Victoria's own list says, is on VIC public holidays.
Public holidays in October that make no long weekend
A public holiday only makes a long weekend when it lands beside one. These are the ones that do not in October 2027 — the answer to "but we have a holiday that month".
- Royal Launceston Show, Thursday 7 October — TAS. A Thursday leaves a working day between it and the weekend either side. It covers only the northern municipalities — Break O'Day, Dorset, George Town, Launceston, Meander Valley, Northern Midlands and West Tamar.
- Royal Hobart Show, Thursday 21 October — TAS. A Thursday leaves a working day between it and the weekend either side. It covers only southern Tasmania — south of and including Oatlands and Swansea, excluding the West Coast.
