The department's own dates, counted differently
The same breaks, counted the department's way. Where this is shorter than the table above, the difference is public holidays and staff days that sit inside the break.

Good to know: Queensland counts a school holiday from the day after term ends to the day before it resumes — usually Saturday to Sunday, longer when a public holiday sits at either end — so its own figures are longer than most, and its Term 4 finishes a week before New South Wales and Victoria.
Whose school holidays are these?
The department's calendar is not everybody's calendar
These are the dates for Queensland state schools. Catholic and independent schools set their own, and in Queensland the differences are often larger than elsewhere. Check your own school.
That is why a search for your state's school holidays turns up your state's education department, an independent schools association and somebody's individual school, all with slightly different dates. None of them is wrong. They are answering for different schools.
- Government schools — The dates in the tables on this page, set by the department.
- Catholic systemic schools — Catholic systemic schools are close to the government dates but not bound by them — dioceses set their own staff development days, and start and finish days can move by a day or two. Check your diocese or your school.
- Independent schools — Independent schools set their own calendar entirely. In practice most start a little earlier and finish a little earlier than the government dates, and their terms can be a few days shorter at each end. The only reliable source is your own school’s published calendar.

Pupil-free days: when teachers go back
Most states and territories bring staff back before students, and the gap is why two calendars can give different answers for the same first day of school. Queensland calls them staff professional development days.
The QLD department sets these dates and publishes them
Five in 2026 and six in 2027, set by the department: two or three fixed at the end of the summer holidays, two in the Easter holidays that a school may move after consulting its local consultative committee, and one fixed student-free day in the third last week of Term 3 — one of only two jurisdictions that put a department-set day off inside term time, Tasmania being the other. Dates are published years ahead; the department's future-dates page already carries 2028 and 2029.
Five in 2026 and six in 2027, and one of them lands mid-term rather than in a holiday.

The catches in QLD's calendar
Things the dates alone do not tell you
- Queensland counts a holiday period from the day after the last school day to the day before students return — usually Saturday to Sunday, longer where a public holiday sits at either end (Good Friday 3 April 2026, the King's Birthday 5 October 2026) — so its own figures include the weekends at both ends.
- All but one of Queensland’s staff professional development days fall in the holidays: the department fixes a student-free day in the third last week of Term 3, in the middle of term. Students do not attend that day. The two days in the Easter holidays are flexible and a school may move them after consulting its local consultative committee, so the April dates here are the scheduled ones rather than a guarantee.
Public holidays during the QLD school year
Term time has public holidays in it too, and they are not the same days as the school breaks — see public holidays in QLD, where every date is checked against the Holidays Act 1983 (Qld).

Why does Queensland say the autumn holidays are 17 days?
Because it counts the weekends at both ends. The department publishes each break from the day after the last school day to the day before students return — usually Saturday to Sunday, but the 2026 autumn break starts on Good Friday, 3 April, and runs to 19 April: seventeen days.
New South Wales publishes the same kind of break without the public holidays and staff days at each end, and would call it eleven. Neither is wrong. If you are comparing two states’ holiday lengths, make sure you are comparing the same measurement.
When does the Queensland school year finish?
Earlier than New South Wales and Victoria. Term 4 ends on 11 December in 2026 and 10 December in 2027, where those two run to between the 17th and the 20th. South Australia finishes on the same day as Queensland.
That gives Queensland families close to a week of head start on New South Wales and Victoria, which is worth knowing if you are booking flights or accommodation against school holidays in more than one state.
Do staff development days come out of the holidays?
All but one do. Queensland puts two or three at the end of the summer holidays (two in 2026, three in 2027) and two in the April break, so children are off anyway. The other is different: a student-free day in the third last week of Term 3, which was Friday 4 September in 2026.
That one is the day to plan for. It is a school day on every other calendar, and the department says students are not required to attend, so it is a day of childcare in the middle of term. For anyone planning around teacher availability, all of them are days the school is open and the students are not.
