Public holidays still to come this spring

  • Tuesday 3 November 2026: Melbourne Cup Day — VIC.

Statewide days only. Show days and other regional holidays are on each state's public holiday page.

Daylight saving

  • Daylight saving starts on Sunday 4 October 2026 in NSW, VIC, SA, TAS and the ACT — clocks go forward one hour.
  • QLD, WA and the NT do not change their clocks.

The daylight saving page has every state's dates for three summers, and the law behind each.

Where the start date comes from

The Bureau of Meteorology counts Australia's seasons from the first of the month, not from the solstices and equinoxes, because that fits Australian temperatures better. The seasons page has all four side by side, and the tropics' wet and dry.

The other three: summer · autumn · winter.

Frequently asked questions

When are day and night the same length?
A few days before the September equinox rather than on it. The atmosphere bends sunlight, so the Sun is visible slightly before it rises and after it sets: the Bureau of Meteorology puts daylight on the equinox itself at about 12 hours 8 minutes across most of Australia, with equal day and night two or three days earlier.
