One holiday, three times of year
In 2027 the King's Birthday falls in June in NSW, VIC, SA, TAS, the ACT and the NT; September in WA; and October in QLD. Six of the eight keep it in June. Queensland's Act puts it on the first Monday in October — the Monday NSW, SA and the ACT keep as Labour Day. Western Australia's Act sets no rule at all: the Governor proclaims the day each year.
In 2026, the City of Karratha and the Town of Port Hedland took the King's Birthday on Monday 3 August instead of Monday 28 September — a swap, so the statewide date is not a public holiday there. Later years' local days are added to the WA page as they are proclaimed.
Every one of these days is a Monday, so each makes a long weekend where it falls — June, September and October.
WA and SA restrict some shops on every full-day public holiday, this one included. Each state's page sets out what may open.
In Queensland its October Monday is Labour Day elsewhere — see Labour Day by state — and every state's statewide holidays for the year are on the year calendar.

Where each date comes from
- NSW: Public Holidays Act 2010 (NSW) No 115, section 4(h).
- VIC: Public Holidays Act 1993 (Vic) No 119/1993, section 6(i).
- QLD: Holidays Act 1983 (Qld), the Schedule.
- WA: Public and Bank Holidays Act 1972 (WA), Schedule 2 — the date each year from the WA Government's published table; the proclamation itself was not read.
- SA: Public Holidays Act 2023 (SA) No 39 of 2023, section 3(1)(i).
- TAS: Statutory Holidays Act 2000 (Tas) No 96 of 2000, section 4(h).
- ACT: Holidays Act 1958 (ACT) A1958-19, section 3(1)(a)(x).
- NT: Public Holidays Act 1981 (NT), Schedule 2.

Frequently asked questions
Is the King's Birthday a public holiday?
Yes — in every state and territory, though not on one day. Some Acts give it a more formal name — South Australia's calls it the Sovereign's Birthday — but it is the same holiday. If you work it, the penalty rate comes from your award or agreement.
Why is the King's Birthday in October in Queensland?
Queensland's Holidays Act sets it on the first Monday in October, and has done since 2016. NSW, SA and the ACT keep that same Monday as Labour Day, so the October long weekend is a different holiday on either side of the border. Queenslanders have no King's Birthday holiday in June.
When is the King's Birthday in WA?
On whichever day the Governor proclaims: Western Australia's Act names the holiday but not its date, and the proclamation is published in the Government Gazette at least three weeks ahead. The dates published so far are Monday 28 September 2026 and Monday 27 September 2027.
