Northern Territory
No — today is not a public holiday in Northern Territory.
Tuesday 8 September 2026.
The Territory takes a Picnic Day in August that exists nowhere else, and leaves its show days out of the Act entirely.

Every NT public holiday in 2026
The working behind the answer. Each row names the provision it comes from, and where a rule changes the date the rule is stated rather than hidden.
| Date | Holiday | Why this date |
|---|---|---|
| Thu 1 Jan | New Year's Day | Section ch2 of the Act |
| Mon 26 Jan | Australia Day | Section ch2 of the Act |
| Fri 3 Apr | Good Friday | Section ch2 of the Act |
| Sat 4 Apr | Easter Saturday | The Act calls it 'the Saturday following Good Friday'. |
| Sun 5 Apr | Easter Sunday | Section ch2 of the Act |
| Mon 6 Apr | Easter Monday | Section ch2 of the Act |
| Sat 25 Apr | Anzac Day | Falls on a Saturday, and the Territory moves Anzac Day only for a Sunday — so it stays on the 25th and nothing is added. |
| Mon 4 May | May Day | The first Monday in May. |
| Mon 8 Jun | King's Birthday | Section ch2 of the Act |
| Mon 3 Aug | Picnic Day | The first Monday in August, and unique to the Territory. |
| Thu 24 Dec | Christmas Evefrom 7pm to midnight | Section ch2 of the Act |
| Fri 25 Dec | Christmas Day | Section ch2 of the Act |
| Sat 26 Dec | Boxing Day | Falls on a Saturday, so the following Monday is a public holiday as well. |
| Mon 28 Dec | Additional public holiday for Boxing Day | Section ch2 of the Act |
| Thu 31 Dec | New Year's Evefrom 7pm to midnight | Section ch2 of the Act |

Long weekends in NT
Three days or more in a row without a working day in the middle. A holiday landing on a Saturday does not make one by itself, which is why these are measured from the gazetted dates rather than assumed. This models a standard Monday-to-Friday week, which is not everyone's. For the same question asked the other way round — who else is off that weekend — see long weekends month by month.
| Dates | Days | Because of |
|---|---|---|
| Sat 24 Jan – Mon 26 Jan | 3 | Australia Day |

| Sat 2 May – Mon 4 May | 3 | May Day |
| Sat 6 Jun – Mon 8 Jun | 3 | King's Birthday |
| Sat 1 Aug – Mon 3 Aug | 3 | Picnic Day |

Which days do NT shops have to close?
The trading list is not the holiday list
There are no restricted trading days in the Northern Territory. Its statute book carries no shop trading hours legislation at all, so a shop may open on any day of the year.
In NT the restricted days are — shorter than the holiday list above, and it does not line up with it. Whether a day is a public holiday and whether shops must shut are two separate questions with two separate Acts behind them.
The Territory and the ACT are the two jurisdictions with no shop trading restrictions whatsoever — the ACT by repealing its Act in 1997, the Territory by never having had one on the books we can find. Every other jurisdiction restricts something: five days in NSW, four in Queensland, two and a half in Victoria, two in Tasmania, and in Western Australia and South Australia a scheme built on shop class and geography instead of days.
The exemptions:
- Nothing to exempt: there is no restriction to be exempt from. Opening hours are a commercial decision, or a matter for a shopping centre lease.
- Liquor and gambling licences carry their own hours and are unaffected.
- This is a finding about SHOPS. Working a public holiday is a separate question entirely, and the answer is in your award or agreement.

Frequently asked questions
Is today a public holiday in NT?
The first line of this page answers that for today on Darwin time, worked out from the same dates as the tables below. If your device's clock has moved past the day the page was built, the answer re-checks itself in your browser and says so beside the verified badge. A part-day holiday gets a “Partly” rather than a yes, and a day that applies in one region only is never counted as a holiday for the whole territory.
How many public holidays are there in NT in 2026?
Fifteen across the whole territory — the first is New Year's Day on Thursday 1 January 2026 and the last is New Year's Eve on Thursday 31 December 2026. The total moves from year to year because several days gain a substitute or an extra Monday when they land on a weekend, and the last column of the table says which rule produced each date.
When is the next public holiday in NT?
The calendar leaf near the top of this page names it and counts the days from today on Darwin time. Holidays are gazetted a year at a time, so the 2027 list already sits under the 2026 one — the answer keeps working through December instead of running out at New Year, and the 2027 dates are the ones to plan travel or rosters around.
Is Anzac Day a public holiday in NT?
Yes. In 2026 the NT public holiday for Anzac Day is Saturday 25 April 2026 — under Public Holidays Act 1981 (NT). Whether a jurisdiction adds a day, swaps the day or leaves a weekend Anzac Day where it falls is the rule that differs most across the country, which is why the answer for NT should never be taken from a national list.
What is Picnic Day?
The first Monday in August, and a Territory institution with no equivalent anywhere else in Australia. Schedule 2 lists it without explanation, which is fitting for a day whose origins are usually traced to a workers’ picnic rather than to any formal commemoration.
It falls on the same Monday that Karratha and Port Hedland in Western Australia take as their regional King’s Birthday — the two are unrelated, but the coincidence means early August is quietly a long weekend across a lot of northern Australia.
Why are the Darwin and Alice Springs show days not on this page?
Because they are not in the Act, and this page publishes what the Act says. Schedule 2 is the Territory-wide list; the show days are gazetted separately under section 6, which lets the Minister appoint a day for a named part of the Territory on at least 28 days’ notice.
They are real public holidays where they apply, and they differ by town — Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Borroloola each have their own. Reading the gazette notices town by town is the next piece of work here, and until it is done this page says the list is Territory-wide rather than pretending it is complete.
Does the Northern Territory have part-day public holidays?
Two, both running from 7.00pm to midnight: Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. They are in Schedule 2 alongside the full days, which is why they are easy to miss.
They match South Australia exactly, in both the pair of dates and the 7pm start. Queensland has a single part-day, on Christmas Eve, opening an hour earlier at 6pm. No other jurisdiction has any.
Is Anzac Day moved in the Territory when it falls on a weekend?
Only for a Sunday. Schedule 2 gives 25 April or, if that day is a Sunday, the following Monday — a swap rather than an addition, and nothing at all when the 25th is a Saturday.
So in 2026 the Territory works Monday 27 April, and in 2027 it takes Monday 26 April while the 25th stops being a holiday. Queensland and the ACT use the identical rule; three jurisdictions swap, two add, and three leave the day exactly where it falls.
