Why there is no single Australian list
Eight parliaments, eight sets of dates
There is no federal public-holiday Act. Each state and territory declares its own days under its own law, so the same date can be a holiday on one side of a border and an ordinary working day on the other. Even where the names match, the weekend rules do not.
Anzac Day 2027 makes the point. It falls on a Sunday, and the country splits three ways: New South Wales, Western Australia and the ACT keep the 25th and add the Monday as well; Queensland and the Northern Territory move the holiday to the Monday, so the Sunday stops being one; and Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania add nothing at all. One commemoration, eight states and territories, three different answers.
That is why every page here is scoped to one state or territory and cites its own instrument. A national list that gives one date per holiday has to flatten those differences, which is exactly where the errors live — so the year calendar and the Labour Day and King's Birthday pages give every state its own answer. Easter shows it within a single weekend: every state has Good Friday and Easter Monday, but the Saturday and Sunday come and go — the Easter holidays state by state lay it out. And one holiday exists in a single state only, set by a football fixture: Victoria's AFL Grand Final Friday. Another is the one a country council can move: Melbourne Cup Day.
Lunar New Year
Lunar New Year is not a public holiday anywhere in Australia — until 2028, when it falls on 26 January and Australia Day makes that day a holiday for an entirely unrelated reason. The question is asked more often in Chinese than in English, so the page exists in both: 农历新年是澳大利亚的公共假期吗.
Frequently asked questions
Is Remembrance Day a public holiday in Australia?
No. Remembrance Day — 11 November, a Wednesday in 2026 — is not a public holiday in any state or territory: none of the eight public-holiday Acts appoints it, so it is an ordinary working day. The commemoration that does bring a public holiday everywhere is Anzac Day.
How many public holidays are there in Australia?
There is no national number: each state and territory sets its own. In 2026 the count of statewide public holidays runs from 9 in TAS to 15 in SA, the ACT and the NT — NSW 13, VIC 14, QLD 13, WA 13, SA 15, TAS 9, ACT 15, NT 15. Those counts include the extra days added when a holiday lands on a weekend, and part-day ones where a state has them; local days such as show holidays are not counted, though every part of TAS has the Royal Hobart Regatta or Recreation Day, so everyone there gets 10.
Which public holidays does every state and territory have?
Nine, in 2026, under one name or another: New Year's Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Labour Day (Eight Hours Day in TAS and May Day in the NT), the King's Birthday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day (the Proclamation Day holiday in SA). The same holiday is not always the same day — Labour Day in three different months and the King's Birthday in three different months across the eight jurisdictions — so the next date of each, state by state, is in the comparison above.
