Queensland show holidays

The next appointed show holiday is Tue 3 Nov — in 10 days — for the Collinsville Annual Show, in one district.

Read from Queensland's own appointment list on Wednesday 16 September 2026.

In Queensland a show holiday is set district by district. Under s4, Holidays Act 1983 (Qld) the Minister appoints a show holiday for a district when that district's council asks for one, so there is no rule to apply and no date to calculate — there is only the list. For 2026 it runs to 98 districts across 45 separate dates, and your council is on it or it is not.

Next year's dates are not out

Queensland appoints these one year at a time

The published list reaches 2026 and stops. That is not an omission on this page — the appointments for the year after have not been made, because each one waits on a council's request and the Minister's appointment under s4, Holidays Act 1983 (Qld). Anyone showing you a date for a Queensland show holiday in a year Queensland has not appointed is guessing, and the two shows named further down are what guessing costs.

One exception: Brisbane's Ekka. The Brisbane local government area's show holiday needs no council request — the Act exempts it — and follows the Royal Queensland Show's own rule, so Queensland publishes it ahead: Wednesday 11 August 2027 and Wednesday 16 August 2028. It is on the Queensland public holidays page with the rest of the state's dates. The 15 other districts that take the Ekka on its Monday are appointed year by year like everyone else.

Queensland has published 6 years so far — 2021 to 2026. This page re-reads that list, and the build fails rather than let it go quietly stale.

The Ekka is two holidays, not one

The Royal Queensland Show gives Brisbane a holiday on Wednesday 12 August, and it gives 15 other districts a holiday on Monday 10 August — the same show, two days, two separate appointments. A page that calls it "Brisbane only" is missing 15 districts; a page that puts every one of them on Brisbane's Wednesday has them at work on the day they are off.

The districts on the Monday: Bundaberg region, City of Moreton Bay, City of Redland, Gladstone region, Gympie region, Lockyer Valley region, Logan City, North Burnett region, Scenic Rim region, Shire of Balonne, Shire of Cherbourg, Somerset region, South Burnett region, Toowoomba region and Western Downs region.

And a sixteenth district is off that day for something else

Goondiwindi's Texas district takes the Texas Show Holiday on the same Monday. It is a different show and a different appointment that happens to share a date — so the day is sixteen districts and two holidays, not sixteen districts at the Ekka.

The weekday holds. The date does not.

With no rule to read, the only honest guide to a year that has not been appointed is what the appointed years have actually done. Across 6 published lists, 54 of 56 shows with at least 4 years of history have kept the same weekday every year — 96% of them. The calendar date moves by a week or two; the day of the week mostly does not.

So if you are planning around a show holiday in a year Queensland has not appointed, plan the weekday and leave the date open. And know that "mostly" is doing real work in that sentence:

  • Miles and District Show — Tuesday 18 May 2021, Tuesday 17 May 2022, Tuesday 23 May 2023, Tuesday 21 May 2024, Tuesday 20 May 2025 and Friday 13 March 2026.
  • Weipa Fishing Classic — Friday 3 September 2021, Monday 13 June 2022, Monday 12 June 2023, Monday 10 June 2024, Monday 9 June 2025 and Monday 8 June 2026.

Counted from the 6 lists Queensland has published, not asserted. Shows are matched on a normalised name because the state's own table rewrites them between years — "Capella & District" became "Capella and District" — and matching the raw text splits one show into two and halves the sample.

Every appointed district, 2026

All 98 of them, in date order, exactly as Queensland appoints them — the ones still to come first. The district column is the appointment's own wording, which is often part of a shire rather than all of it.

The rest of Queensland's year

A show holiday is a public holiday, not a bank holiday — it counts for pay and for leave in the district it covers. Queensland's statewide public holidays are the days everyone gets wherever they live, and the long weekends by month show which of them fall next to a weekend.

Frequently asked questions

When is my district's show holiday next year?
Queensland has not appointed it yet. The list reaches 2026 and the appointments for the year after are made one district at a time, on each council's request, under s4, Holidays Act 1983 (Qld). The nearest honest answer is your district's own history: 54 of 56 shows have kept the same weekday in every year published, so the weekday is worth planning around and the date is not. The exception is Brisbane's Ekka holiday, which needs no request and is already published: Wednesday 11 August 2027 and Wednesday 16 August 2028.
Is a show holiday a real public holiday?
Yes, in the district it covers. It is a public holiday under the Holidays Act 1983, so public-holiday pay and penalty rates apply there — unlike the special days the Act makes bank holidays only. It applies to the appointed district, not to Queensland, so it is not a day off in the next shire.
Why do sixteen districts have a holiday on the same day in August?
Fifteen of them take the Royal Queensland Show — the Ekka — on the Monday, under appointments separate from Brisbane's, which falls on the Wednesday. The sixteenth is Goondiwindi's Texas district, which takes the Texas Show Holiday, a different show that happens to land on the same date.
My council is not on the list. Do we get a show day?
Not as a public holiday. A district appears here only where its local government asked for an appointment and the Minister made one, so an absent council means no appointed show holiday rather than a gap in this page. Its show may still run; the holiday is a separate thing from the show.
