Where the date comes from

Australia marks Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May, the date US President Woodrow Wilson declared in 1914. It was first held here in 1924, after the losses of the First World War, when Sydney woman Janet Heyden began it for the aged mothers she met visiting Newington State Hospital.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mother's Day a public holiday in Australia?
No. No state or territory's public holidays Act names it, and it always lands on a Sunday anyway, so nobody gains a day off from it.
