Where the date comes from

Australia marks Father's Day on the first Sunday in September — not in June, as the United States does, where the third Sunday in June was made permanent in 1972. The modern day began in the US; one of the earliest Australian mentions the ABC found is in the Newcastle Sun in September 1936. A calculator built for American readers can give you a June date, which is the wrong answer here.

Frequently asked questions

Is Father's Day a public holiday in Australia?
No. No state or territory's public holidays Act names it, and it always lands on a Sunday anyway, so nobody gains a day off from it.
