Tasmania

No — today is not a public holiday in Tasmania.

Tuesday 8 September 2026.

Tasmania has no Easter Saturday or Sunday, calls Labour Day Eight Hours Day, and hands out nine local public holidays by region — more than anywhere else in the country.

The working behind the answer. Each row names the provision it comes from, and where a rule changes the date the rule is stated rather than hidden.

Long weekends in TAS

Three days or more in a row without a working day in the middle. A holiday landing on a Saturday does not make one by itself, which is why these are measured from the gazetted dates rather than assumed. This models a standard Monday-to-Friday week, which is not everyone's. For the same question asked the other way round — who else is off that weekend — see long weekends month by month.

Which days do TAS shops have to close?

The trading list is not the holiday list

Tasmania restricts only two days, and only for large retailers: WorkSafe Tasmania states that the Shop Trading Hours Act 1984 places trading restrictions on large retailers on Christmas Day and Good Friday.

In TAS the restricted days are Christmas Day and Good Friday — shorter than the holiday list above, and it does not line up with it. Whether a day is a public holiday and whether shops must shut are two separate questions with two separate Acts behind them.

Two days is the shortest restricted list of any jurisdiction published here — New South Wales closes on five, Victoria on two and a half. Boxing Day, which shuts NSW shops, is an ordinary trading day in Tasmania.

The exemptions:

  • The restriction is aimed at LARGE retailers; smaller shops are outside it.
  • Anzac Day trading is dealt with separately, under the Anzac Day Observance Act 1929, which the Department of Premier and Cabinet administers rather than WorkSafe.

Does your council get it?

Some public holidays apply to part of the state only

Section 5 and Schedule 1 make nine local days real public holidays for named parts of the State — the Royal Hobart Regatta, four agricultural shows, two island shows, Agfest and Recreation Day. Each is defined by a RULE rather than a date, so they can be computed years ahead, and the Minister may amend the Schedule only by public notice gazetted at least 14 days out with both Houses' approval. Recreation Day is the elegant part: it applies everywhere that does not observe the Regatta, so between them the two cover the State.

So the honest answer to "do I get the show day" depends on which local government area you are in, not which state. The statewide table above is complete; the district-by-district list is the next thing being added here.

Frequently asked questions

Is today a public holiday in TAS?

The first line of this page answers that for today on Hobart time, worked out from the same dates as the tables below. If your device's clock has moved past the day the page was built, the answer re-checks itself in your browser and says so beside the verified badge. A part-day holiday gets a “Partly” rather than a yes, and a day that applies in one region only is never counted as a holiday for the whole state.

How many public holidays are there in TAS in 2026?

Nine across the whole state — the first is New Year's Day on Thursday 1 January 2026 and the last is Boxing Day holiday on Monday 28 December 2026, with twelve more that apply in part of the state only. The total moves from year to year because several days gain a substitute or an extra Monday when they land on a weekend, and the last column of the table says which rule produced each date.

When is the next public holiday in TAS?

The calendar leaf near the top of this page names it and counts the days from today on Hobart time. Holidays are gazetted a year at a time, so the 2027 list already sits under the 2026 one — the answer keeps working through December instead of running out at New Year, and the 2027 dates are the ones to plan travel or rosters around.

Is Anzac Day a public holiday in TAS?

Yes. In 2026 the TAS public holiday for Anzac Day is Saturday 25 April 2026 — under Statutory Holidays Act 2000 (Tas) No 96 of 2000. Whether a jurisdiction adds a day, swaps the day or leaves a weekend Anzac Day where it falls is the rule that differs most across the country, which is why the answer for TAS should never be taken from a national list.

Is Easter Tuesday a public holiday in Tasmania?

For most Tasmanians, no — and this is the most misreported day in the country. Easter Tuesday is not in section 4, which is the list of statutory holidays observed as public holidays generally. It sits in section 6, which gives it to people outside the national workplace relations system: in practice the Tasmanian State Service.

Section 6 goes further. Someone covered by it who does not ordinarily work on a Tuesday gets no payment and no time in lieu for the day. So "Tasmania has Easter Tuesday" is true of a minority of Tasmanian workers, and false of most of the people who read it.

Which parts of Tasmania get their own public holidays?

Almost all of it, and the Act does the dividing. Schedule 1 makes nine local days real public holidays for named areas — the Royal Hobart Regatta, four agricultural shows, the King Island and Flinders Island shows, Agfest and Recreation Day.

The neat part is Recreation Day, which applies to every part of the State that does not observe the Regatta. Between the two, the whole of Tasmania is covered: the south takes a February Monday for the Regatta and the rest takes a November Monday instead.

Why does Tasmania move Boxing Day but not Christmas Day?

Because section 4 uses two different mechanisms a few lines apart, and it is worth reading twice. Christmas Day on a Saturday adds the following Monday, so both days are holidays. Boxing Day on a weekend is moved — the Monday or Tuesday becomes the holiday and 26 December is not one.

In 2027 that plays out in a single week: 25 December is a Saturday and 27 December is added, while 26 December is a Sunday and the holiday shifts to Tuesday the 28th, leaving the 26th itself an ordinary day.

What is Eight Hours Day?

Tasmania’s name for the second Monday in March, and the Act uses it rather than "Labour Day". It commemorates the eight-hour working day rather than the labour movement in general, which is the same event Victoria marks on the very same Monday under the other name.

So the second Monday in March is a public holiday in four jurisdictions for four stated reasons: Eight Hours Day in Tasmania, Labour Day in Victoria, Adelaide Cup Day in South Australia and Canberra Day in the ACT. New South Wales, Queensland, WA and the NT all work that day.
